Smaug by Dostor Smaug by Dostor
My entry for :iconvtforpedro:s contest! The objective was to draw Smaug from The Hobbit c:

I really like the character, and I tried to make him justice (even though he turned out very similar to all other dragons I draw. No points for creativity here) The sketch is traditional, with digital coloration

and thanks to :iconthunderskull: for shading this for me!

Smaug (c) Tolkien

To me, Smaug is my #1 dragon from anything, with Dragon Maleficent being my #2, and King Ghidorah being my #3!

One of the best drawings of Smaug I've seen. Great job portraying one of Tolkien's master dragons.

no, not Smaug, I will complain to all Smaug "artists" he is lion faced, furry cheeks and fur down his spin, missing a scale on his chest, VERY red, cat eared and has an under bite.

Who cares? If the artiest interpreted it like this, then it's fine. I'm sick of seeing your stupid comment spamming every fan picture I see.

The shrewd look on his face hints at a cunning nature, without forfeiting the raw power of his form. The way his hands won’t let go of his treasure, even when there isn’t anyone on hand who can steal it, does a good job at showcasing his greed, which is an inescapable aspect of his character. All in all, it is true to his personality, his strengh, and the themes that surround him. Well done!

If there is one nitpick, it is that we don’t have a reference with which to determine his size; For all I know, he could range from the size of a house to the size of a skyscraper. Still, I understand that Smaug would never allow anyone near his horde, so the ways to establish his scale are already pretty limited.
